The number of competitors for the above was fairly satisfactory, but only a few, a very few of the efforts are good enough to print. Some appear to have altogether mistaken the description of verse required, whilst many others have thrown overboard not only reason, but ryhme also. The printed list was submitted to a jury of three independent persons, who, after much palaver, declared in favour of No. 8. The next best they considered to be No. 15 and Nos. 17 b and 17 c. Other fairly good ones are 17, and 17 d, c, and f. I think, however, it will be admitted that the committee have chosen ■wisely. The metre of No. 8 is correct, the subject matter is witty, and the verse as a whole, neat,
