INTOXICATION CHARGE.
MECHANIC FINED. EARLY MORNING OFFENCE. VIEWS OF MAGISTRATE. [By Telegraph.—Press Association]. AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. "I think this case can be met by a substantial fine instead of imprisonment," said Mr. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday after Herbert Allan Bowie (29), a motor mechanic, admitted he was in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car in Hobson Street on September 20. At 4.15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20, said Sub-Inspector Fox, while on duty in Hobson Street, a constablo found Bowie sitting in the driver's seat of the car, which was parked outside a boardinghouse. He was under the influence of liguor, but was not drunk. He was voluble and argumentative. "He had been out with friends in the ear, in which whisky and beer had been taken," said Mr. Fox.
Appearing for accused, Mr. Robinson said there were two factors material to the question of punishment. The offence was commited early in the morning when the streets were clear of traffic, and the degree of intoxication was very slight. Bowie was fined £25 and was allowed a week to pay. His license was cancelled for 18 months.
