A HAPPY ’XMAS.
MONEY FOR NEEDY. What Labour Plans. NEW YEAR SESSION. MR. SAVAGE MEANS BUSINESS. i,By Telcgrupn.—i’ress Association, j AUCKLAND, Nov. 28. In an interview, Mr. M. J. Savage, leader oi the Labour Party, said all unemployed could be assured of a luippy Christmas. Labour would seo to it that the necessary payments were made to enable those avlio had been deprived of the decencies of life to enjoy Christmas like anyone else.
“Parliament Avill be broadcast and the five-year-olds Avill be admitted to the State schools after the summer vacation,” said Mr. Savage. Civil servants Avilling to co-operate with the Government need have no fear of their position. Mr. Savage sees no reason Avhy the fullest co-operation should not be expected. Parliament may meet early in the Ncav Year and if necessary Avill go on sitting till Labour has put into effect the most essential points in its legislative programme. It is not Labour’s intention to increase the cost of Government, but alterations to the existing state of national affairs are so vitally necessary that the length of the session will not be a consideration.
“We have a job—indeed, a duty —to do, and we mean to do it,” he said. “Our job is to give service.”
He said the least the Government Avould do Avould be to restore the poAvers of the Arbitration Court, but he hoped very soon to make it an improved tribunal. Mr. Savage leaves for Wellington on Sunday night.
