Crushing Taxation.

GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. WHAT LABOUR WOULD DO. MR. SAVAGE'S ASSURANCE. (Special to Star). HAMILTON, Nov. 28. "At the next election Labour will Oc accused of wishing to commandeer savings bank deposits and generally to destroy tne savings of the people/' declared Mr. M. J. Savage, Leader of the Upposition, when addressing a large meeting at Ngaruawahia on Monday evening. "The charge of wishing to confiscate private property will no doubt oe freely made," the speaker proceeded, "but if the Coalition Government continues along its present lines of inequitable and crushing taxation there will not be much left for the next Government to deal with." Mr. Savage added that sales and unemployment taxes were outstanding examples of unjust forms of taxation, being equivalent to burning the candle at both ends. If given a majority in Parliament the policy of Labour would be to stand or fall in defence of the people's rights and savings, which were now being frittered away.
