Severely Burned.
CLOTHES ON FIRE. HOTEL EMPLOYEE. ACCIDENT WITH PETROL. (.Special to Star). AUCKLAND, Sept. .15. Severe burns were suffered by au employee of the hotel at Maungaturoto, Mr. Edward Mahoney, aged 56, single, when his clothes were set alight while he was pouring benzine at 6 o'clock on Thursday evening. The man, who formerly lived at Auckland, had been employed at the hotel only since Monday. Mr. Mahoney had gone to a building about 50 yards from the hotel to replenish the tank of a petrol engine used to generate electric power. As he was pouring the benzine it was ignited by a candle-lantern, which was standing a short distance away. Benzine was splashed over his clothing, which was quickly in flames. Ml*. Mahoney rushed into the yard, shouting for assistance, but before others from the hotel were able to smother the flames his clothes were almost completely destroyed and ho suffered severe burns practically all over the body. The injured man was immediately taken by the proprietor, Mr. J. T.
Caldwell, in a motor-car to the Paparoa Hospital, a distance of nine miles. Yesterday he was transferred in a St. John ambulance to To Kopuru Hospital, a distance of 33 miles. His condition is reported to be very serious.
The fire in the engine-room was suppressed before any serious damage was caused.
