Mr Thomas Dunn, of Sealey Street, celebrates his 99th. birthday to-mor-
row, May 8
Mr Dunn left London in the ship Dauntless on Christmas Day, 1864, arriving in Auckland five months later. After a trip or two on different ships trading to Sydney, Mr Dunn was in Auckland when he heard of gold be:Sng discovered at Thames, and came .here in a cutter just before the field was declared a goldfield. When the Caledonian commenced working he -was employed in the mine and helped to take out the famous patch which stands on record as the richest run of gold found at Thames. He worked for many years in most of the successful mines of Thames, including the Prince Imperial, Queen of Beauty and Moanataiari. Some years later he was tributing on the HagueSmith reef on the Una Hill when he was successful in winning a lot of gold. For many years he has been living at the top of Sealey Street, close to the Una Hill. He still maintains there is plenty of gold in this famous old hill. Mrs Dunn died three years age. His •daughter, Mrs Campbell, looks after her aged father, and his other daughters, Mesdames E. Hudson and W. McGregor, reside at Auckland, the former at Grey Lynn and the latter at Dominion Road. Mr Dunn can recall many of, the stirring events of the early days of Thames, and considering his great age and failing eyesight, is in wonderful health. His daughter has made him a wonderful cake, containing 99 candles, and the cake will be cut "by Mr Dunn tomorrow.
