The Dorchester Grammar School, from the .Governorship of which Mr. Thomas Hardy has resigned after many years, was founded in 1569 by Thomas Hardy, the common ancestor of the novelist and of the Admiral, Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy. The present building, which is Tudor in style, replaced an older one in 1879, but the original mullion-windowed schoolroom still remains, with a fine oak Jacobean screen across one end of it. Hutchins, the famous Dorset historian, was educated here toward the close of the 17th century, and among many distinguished men who have passed through the school in recent years was Sir Frederick Trevers, the noted surgeon.
