A GREAT BRIDGE.
FIRTH OF FORTH PROJECT. The decision, of the Ministry of Transport to make preliminary surveys for a road bridge over the Firth of Forth at Queensferry is not the first project of the kind. As far back as 1805 a proposal was made for a double tunnel under the bed of the Forth; a pamphlet was published and a prospectus issued, but apparently the idea was in advance of the times, for nothing practical was done. In ISIB James Anderson produced his scheme for a bridge at Queensferry, which was to contain main spans of 1500 to 2 )00 feet, was to be 33 feet wide, and was to cost only £205,000, as against n: re than three millions actually spent on the famous railway bridge. Experts who have examined the designs have thought it just as well that Anderson’s scheme did not get beyond paper!
