! PENNY INCOME-TAX BILL. In an alley adjoining the property of Mr. S. J. Carey, of High Street. Hastings, stands a pump said to be 400 years old. It gives water of great purity, and at one time was a valuable asset, producing £IOO a year from those who bought the water. The pump is assessed at £1 for rating purposes, and every year Mr. Carew receives from hte income-tax authorities a demand note for one penny.
2208 SMALLPOX CASES. According to the British BegistrarGeneral’s returns, from January Ist to February 20th this j-ear, - there have been 2208 cases of smallpox—almost as many as in the whole of 1923 (2504 cases). In the small mining town of Shirebrook, Derbyshire, there is an epidemic of smallpox. Twenty patients are in hospital, and fresh cases are being notified almost daily.
