A ROMANCE OF EMPIRE.
THE NILE DAM. AN ENORMOUS STRUCTURE. The picturesque article which was published by Mr. G. \\ ard Price, special correspondent to the Daily Mail in the Sudan, shows how steadily the work of empire-building is proceeding in that far-off region of tropical Africa. The story which he told of the enormous dam "thrown across the Blue Nile, near Khartum, is in itself a romance. When completed, and when the vast reservoir which it encloses is in action, a large area at present desert will be irrigated and fitted for cotton cultivation. l'n no direction is our race rendering greater services to mankind than in carrying through enterprises of this gigantic character, which vie with the Pyramids in grandeur, but tar surpass them in practical value. With the rapid increase ol cotton growing in the Sudan, British dependence on the United States will diminish. Mr. Ward Price demolishes the Egyptian contention that the magnificent new dam at Senar will affect the water supply of Egypt proper. It will do nothing of the kind, hut merely impound and use for the Sudanese water which is at present swept down by the Nile when in Hood. After all, the Sudanese have their rights as well as the Egyptians. The campaign which lias been carried out Irom Cairo against our country on this count is part of the organised attempt to drive us altogether from Egypt. W r e shall remain in the Sudan, and we have no intention ol being intrigued out of Egypt.
