FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
That all possible steps are being taken to prevent the introduction of foot and mouth disease in New Zealand through the medium of imported straw, is evident from a letter received by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce from the Director-General of Agriculture, Dr. C. J. Reakes. The 'letter enclosed a draft of the regulations which were being submitted to Cabinet, and which ware designed to prevent any possible lisk of the introduction of infection. “In this connection, I may state,” continued the Director, “that we are advised by the High Commissioner that crockery exporters in Great Britain have established a sterilising plant in the pottery districts for the purpose of thoroughly disinfecting hay or straw used for packing goods intended for export. “The regulations provide that all imported hay or straw shall be destroyed within three days after unpacking, unless a certificate could be produced that it had been sterilised in England before shipment.”
