The Thames Star. WEDNESDAY, FEB. 28, 1923. THE MAYORALTY.
The citizens of Thames generally will regret the decision of the Mayor, Mr E. N. Miller, to retire from that important position at the close of the present term. Mr M' er has not spared himself in the service of Thames and district during the past four years, and his occupancy of the mayoral chair has been an important period in the municipal history of the borough. It was first of all necessary to prepare the way for the important public services needed to bring Thames into line with all progressive municipalities, and then to put into operation the constructional work. As Mr Miller said yesterday, much of the work now in hand has been made possible by the splendid support accorded both Mayor and Council by the ratepayers and the residents, and it was the natural corollary that the citizens should desire to see those who had carried the schemes thus far entrusted w T ith the task of carrying them to completion. The deputation which waited on Mr Miller yesterday was in itself a tribute to his success as the executive head of the borough, and his work as a citizen. Anyone acquainted with the activities of the town and district recognises that Mr Miller has discharged onerous duties with a zeal and an ability that have been most marked. Anything and everything 'that has made for progress and unity has had his unfailing support, arid his terms of office will he
remembered as marking great progress in the welfare of Thames. At the morning service at the Baptist and Congregational Church on Sunday last the pastor, the Rev W. E Lambert, referred to the death of the Rev. W. R. Woolley, for 15 years minister of the Baptist Church in Thames. A motion of condolence was passed in silence, the congregation standing.
