MEAT TRADE.

TARANAKI FIGURES. The quantity of meat for export handled at the Taranaki Farmers’ Smart Road works during the season just closed /shows a considerable falling off compared with last year, says the News. A material factor was that last year was a record one for the dairy farmer, and following on the slump in beef, many acres hitherto given over to grazing were cut up and utilised as dairy farms. Consequently, in noting the Dominion production figures for this season, it will be seen there is a large increase in the amount of butter and cheese exported and a marked decline in beef and mutton. This applies not only to Taranaki, but to the whole of New Zealand. The season opened on December 12, 1921, and ceased on May 11, 1922. During this period the company slaughtered 51,266 sheep, 27,724 lambs, making 79,990 carcases of mutton, and 2048 cattle; while last year the figures were: 56,436 sheep, 32,688 lambs, a total of 89,124 of mutton, and 6227 cattle.
