SANITATION DUMP.

(To the Editor.)'' " '"; Sir.—-In your columns of'Tuesday last, "Resident" sounded a timely warning of the danger existing through the disgraceful state of the insanitary dump "at 1 Parawai station. As stated by "Resident,'' a strong-protest, was made against the use 'Crf a so close to station and abattoir, etc. But we were told we did not know What we "were talking about, and were making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Rovr, sir,, the mole-hill has assumed the mnimfn/inmiK nronortions of a mib-

lie scandal, and after five months' trial, the conditions are so disgraceful that' it behoves all who livo in the vicinity,, and all who patronise Parawai station, to get together and demand that the use of the present site should- be< (.immediately discontinued. We■■! are moro than ever convinced that it is impossible to satisfactorily bury such a volume of refuse in so smalia plot of sand arid shell. The conditions obtaining at present are intolerble, the stench at the station of*"cn being sufficient to sicken tho strongest. Five large pits have now been filled, and four of these have burst away the sand, or have been washed out by an extra high tide, and the contents spread over surrounding low ground. The fifth.

with an estimated, depth.of 2ft. Gin., now contains over 1009 cubic feet of slush (depth only estimated) all exposed to tho sun and wind for myriads of flies to" crawl on, and then-fly., elsewhere. All this within 450yds. of the station yard, and in a direct lino with the prevailing wind. Any further evidence required to, substantiate the übove statements wll be speedily.forthcoming.—l am, etc., F. J. CAUSLEF.
