DOUBTFUL HONOURS
The recently published list of those upon whom orders of, the British: Empire have been conferred', challenges, ; attention. The list contjains. a large piumber of names, some of i-ecognised earnest war workers; But '^vith re-' gard to other^i the reason for their inclusion is sis much "a. puzzle as the. position of tlhe proverbial fly in amiber. How are these appointments made, or who is responsible for coiriiferring membership of the Order upon nonentities, while people really entitled tj> it are .passed over?; Is <the position M' reward 'iar political support rather than for patriotic labour? If so, what should be an undoubted honour will speedily degenerate, and be ibeld in piiblio con tempt. There are one or two ladies in Thames, who have performed a vast- amount of -patriotic work, yet the official recognition, of tjheir labours is still withheld. If mrommendatione for this> honour are made by members.for tihe district, it is pertinent to enquire •■"if our memiber has yet laid before the Government the undoubted claims of Tlhames war workers, and if so, what response hae been, made.
