A SCHOONER ON FIRE
AUCKLAND. Oct.' 7. , The 'Northern Company's auxiliary Greyhound, caught fire oif, Kawau Islaind on Saturday evening, and was towed back to Aucklaaifl, - with the after 1 part, of the vessel in flaodes, and' the cabin aujd engineroom gutted. The crew of thei Glenelgj noiiceil tine flames issuiing from the schooner, and Captain Quinn ran his s.teainer alongsido the) burning! vessel, to which he made fast and made for Auckland with all possible speed. Meanwhile the Glenelg's s'tctun pump was pumpingl water on th©> flames, but no appreo'able effect was. made. On the way ta poirt the- Glenelg^s catw gave all assistance possible towards confining the flames to the after part of the Greyhound. About 70 oases >'*f benzine stowed <m deck were placed on the GlenelgiOn; aii'i-ving in. liarbour the fire was bursting' through, the top of the en-gine-room and cabin. It tw>k the fire brigade two hours to subdue the flaimes. The oaibin' rand eivgincn-oocn were gutted, and-the after deck burnt ' through, and the. inside of the after part of the hull charred. . „ Thei Greyhound nast abowt 60 ton*, j of general cargo h\ the hold, whic* was damaged by water only.
