ARITHMETICAL CALCULATIONS.
The last annual meeting of the N.Z. Educational Institute, having resolved that the time had arrived when its activities could be effectively carried on by honorary executive officers, imposed a minimum annual subscription of 15& per member. At lasb week's annual meeting ef the Auckland branch, the following graduated scale of subscriptions was adopted. For teachers with salary under £200, 15s; from £200 .to £299, £1; from £300 to £349, 255; and £350 or higher, 30s. The proposals naturally prou yoked some discussionj and various mem. bers quoted the results of calculations rapidly made to prove that the treasurer would have a ttoo large a surplus) It was generally believed that the ladies, too, were strongly opposed to the increase. When at length one of them aaid that she too had been making mathematical calculations and spoke feelingly of the war time demands upon a limited purse. Expectancy' ran high, and it was oßVious that she had many sympathisers, not all ladies either. When, however, she announced that her arxth••metical effort bad assured her that the increase in her case amounted to the huge amount of nearly |d per week, and thi'ut she thought she really could manage to pay thait, the objectors were abBolutely laughed out of court, and the motion was adopted nem dis.
