Cricket.

(NOTEB BY OBBEKVER )

The senior cricket of the past two weeks has been noteworthy for 'one thing only, and that is on account of the record score put up byTararu, their 217 in one innings being a local record. It was only to be expected. T!ie opposition was weak, but the Karaka team will undoubtedly do much better before long, as on Satuiday last a marked improvement in the bowling was observable. I

beheve they are to have the services of the brothers Archie and Harry Df.ie to-day. If so their bowling and batting strength will be considerably added to. Success to the Karaka team, as they play the game in the proper spirit.

The long grass is again in evidence, and many runs are lost thereby, as even the "smiters" find sometimes to their cost.

The junior competition is getting more interesting as the season progresses.- Last Saturday Native Fern inflicted their first defeat upon High School, and the hopes of the "Ferns" rui! high, and they threaten to win the Lapraik Shield, if not they, say the team that 'beats them will deserve it.

The boys 'bowl and field well, but most of therm are inclined to go in for "hitting." One fault I noticed in tho placing of the field—that is, the fieldsman 'are in too ©lose to the 'batsmen. It is always an easier matter to come in a little to meet a ball than to run 'backwards.

;'During otte of the. intervals on Saturday Mi- Giageußtown announced to the boys tha* he intends to give a medal to each of the three teams forthetoest Watting, "average in each: club. The boys showed their appreciation of'the'generosity of the donor by according him three hearty cheers. . " ■•'■ ■•' ' ■ ■.:/- ; -"' ' ■,'
