The Thames Star. Resurrexi. MONDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1899. THE WAR.

Oub messages from the Cape.will again be read with interest this evening. The reported capture of a train and loss of life is contradicted so far as the latter portion is concerned. It appears there were two trains, one proceeding northward with guns and ammunition for the British troops at Mafeking, and the other going southward conveying women and*children. It was the former which was shelled by the Boers, and the announcement of the safe arrival of the latter train at Vryburg will be read with satisfaction and relief. At the time we received the message on Saturday we were inclined to doubt its correctness, especially as it was so brief and vague. Had it been correct it is probable the details given would have been fuller. Another reason for doubting its accuracy was the fact that it alluded to a train going southward. Now, the Boers would know very well that a train proceeding in that direction would not be likely to contain British troops, but would probably be conveying non-combatants, and it would have been very bad policy on their part to interfere with it, as they would have to a certainty completely alienated any sympathy felt for them by foreigner*. The loss of guns and ammunition is unfortunate, but it is of little consequence, as they can easily be replaced. The announcement that the Boers have blown up two bridges and destroyed a train laden with dynamite, if confirmed, shows that our adversaries are already commencing the work of destruction, as predicted by General Joubert months ago.
