Suicide by Shooting.

■» . ■ Yesterday word was received in town that a man named Michael Byrnes, aged 72 years, who lived by himself, (his wife having died about 12 months ago) in a house between Waionio and Tapu, was supposed to have committed suicide. A friend— Francis Creighton—called at the house at 12 yesterday and saw the body of the man lying on a sheet his head, resting on a pillow, and near at hand was a note which contained a statement to the effect that he (Byrnes) felt he was going mad, and it was better he should be dead than go to a mad house. He also wrote words saying ajetter had been posted to Creighton. There was a strong smell of carbolic acid about the room and it was concluded that the deceased had poisoned himself. He had been drinking semewhat heavily lately. The body was brought into town last night and taken to the Hospital.
