Fire at Hikutaia.

About 5 o'clock last evening a son of Mr John Lea Stevens, of Hikutaia, arrived in town aod informed Sergt. Murphy that his father's stables had been destroyed by fire. It appears that tbe fire broke out about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, at which time three of the sons were about the hotel, which is situated on the opposite side of the road to the stables and the store, when they noticed the smoke and flames, but it was then too late to save the building. No damage was done to the store, but the stables, which provided accommodation for about 30 horses, wese completely destroyed together with eovon or eight set of saddlery and some cart harness. The exact extent of tbe damage is uot at present known, nor have we been able to ascertain whether there is any insurance. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Constable O'Brien left here about 11 a.m. to* day to make inquiries into the matter, and ascertain what damage had been done, but had not returned up to the hour of our going to press-
