BEACH V. HANLAN.

(Peess Association.)

Sydney, Last night. The race between W. Beach and E. Hanlan for £500 a-side was rowed over the championship course on , the Paramatta river this afternoon. There was a large attendance at the various points of vantage along the banks of the river. Beach had the call in the betting, and a lot of money was laid on him. A good start was effected. Bafore going 200 yards Beach had a pronounced lead, but Hanlan with a grand spurt gradually reduced the gap, and on passing the mile posts tbe boats were ou level terms. Crossing over to Putney the Canadian had a slight lead, but the rough water interfered with him, and Beach again forged ahead. When Cabarila was reached, Beach led hia opponent by two and a half lengths,-when tha latter again spurted, and reduced tbe distanca. Beach also increased his pace, and it was evident that each oarsman had a lot left in him. From Gladesville Hantan rowed a plucky losing race, but could not get on even terms with Beach, who won by two lengths. Time, 21mins ISseos.
