' A wife in Adelaide lately put in a petition for dirbrce on the ground that her husband was " a natural born fool." As a result of the Newcastle strike, the Union S.S. Co. announce that they will withdraw some of their steamers in the Sydney service next month, and freights are increased. They are getting up a real ice rink in Melbourne. The prospectus poetically describes the ice-floor as one "that will enable young Australia to realise the in* vigorating fields of ice on which their father skated." A ratepayer of Warroambool who prides himself on his impartiality had two Totes ttt a recent municipal election. He struck one candidate's name off one paper, and his opponent's off the other, and before depositing them in the ballot box. he walked outside to where one of the candidates < was standing, and made the remark—" Yon see I've treated both of you fairly." " Yes," replied the can* didate. " but you might just as well have stayed at home."
Two paragraphs which appear in juxtaposition in the Daily News are id a strange contrast. In the first the earnings of a successful jockey are discussed, and it is shown that one of these practitioners can make from £4000 to £5000, even if he is always quite " straight." In the second the writer comments on the circumstances and conduct of a clergyman in the north who on a stipend of £380 a year alleges that he has to snpport himself, two curates, two lay helpers, and a schoolmaster. The schoolmaster, who mast possess the usual firtues and play the harmonium, is to hare £25 per annum— about a tenth of what a fashionable jockey will sometimes receiTe fora single race.
