JOURNEY PERFORMED BY MAN AND HORSE.
1 The endurance of the Australian bush horse is well-known, and Mossman's famous ride in 1853 From Sydney to Maitland, a distance ot 140 miles, over rough country, in 20 hours, will always be quoted as a remnrkahie performance. The unfortunate part of it, however, was that the poor beast died immediately afterwards. LoDgjourneys on hoi-aebscfc are little thought of in Soiith America, where thirty, forty, and iifff leagued are often accomplished on one librss. A gentleman living near Colonia is credited with having ridden 120 miles in fourteen hours on tbe same horse. Another rode from San Pedro to Monto Video, 126 miles, in one day, on the same borte. A man was sent in to .Monte Video from a place 150 mileg distant, lie made the distance in or<e day, same horse, rested one day, and returned the third day. On another occasion a man rode from Monte Video to Paysandu, a distance of 300 miles, in one day, using several horses. It is also remarkable that the horses which accomplished these arduous tasks were all grass fed and unshod.
