The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1887.

We have pricked off the returns from the various electorates throughout the country, and counting all those who are classed as being " Doubtful " among the Opposition, we find that the voice of the country has been expressed against the pressnt Government. The mpjority, however, is apparently a very narrow one, and one that could we think easily be turned. Whether the Government in the face of Sir Robert Istout's defeat will be prepared to meet the House, circumstanced as they are, or whether they will elect to resign, leaving to His Excellency the Governor to send for whomever he considers best fitted to form a stable Govern' ment, we cannot say. But our readers will take note that by' the rejection of both Sir Robert Stout and also of the Hon. Mr Tole, two vacant portfolios are left at the disposal of the Government* and it is a matter of conjecture whether the Government have not still so much power in their hands that they will be able to make use of these portfolios to their advantage at the present crisis. It is quite possible that the Governor might send for Sir Julius Togel or the Hon. Mr Larnaoh, asking either to accept the position of Premier, and in the event of either accepting, a Coalition Ministry composed of the incongruous elements of "Doubtfuli" and "Independents" could be formed and the business of the country carried on until well de. fined lines were laid before the House, to enable parties to determine themselves. Such a course would, we think, be the most probable and most likely one to meet the approval of the country.
