John Lundon has announced'himself as a candidate for the Bay of Islands. Hori Karaka Tawiti stands for the Northern Native Electorate, and will be opposed by Hone Mohi Tauhai and Heta te Hara. j> ,lt is rumored that James Mackay will contest Waikato East. J. E. Campbell's candidature for it is itated not to be objectionable to the Grey party. , At Cambridge Mrs Marshall took poison by mistake, bnt is now ont of danger. A man named Gardiner hid a miraoulous escape from a frightful death at the bridge at Hamilton. He fell from the trestle work 35 feet high clear of the trestle into a cutting a depth of 70 feet. Farther than being severely shaken he was unhurt.
An important shipping case was tried at, the B.M. Court, McDonald v. McGillivray, a claim for £8 12s. Plaintiff is a, seaman, defendant the master. The claim is for wages in lieu of notice, hq being discharged at 24 hours' warning. The Magistrate decided that, until the seaman had'worked a month, or earned a month's wages., there could be no agreement for 24 hours'notice, as that meant of course that the man was guilty of no misconduct justifying an immediate discharge. The charge of cruelty against the captain and mate of the Minister of Marine has been under investigation all day. The cross-examination of Alfred Cale is still unfinished.
The ship Langstone was ready to sail for Melbourne yesterday, when a part of , the crew refused duty. Ultimately they consented with the exception of Alfred Crest, the ringleader, who was sentenced to imprisonment this morning. .
