The addresses of candidates for Legislative honors are now the order of the day. The majority of those we have read are composed of the usual modicum * of election promises, most candidates seemingly, endeavouring to propitiate all clauses by promising anything and every- . thing. The speech of Mr J. S. Macfarlane to the Waitemata electors on Saturday night wag a striking exception to the prevalent rule. It was an honest and straightforward one, strongly characteristic of the man, and though Mir Macfarlanc'a opinions of Sir George Grey's administration are not in accord with our own, we cannot but help admiring the calm dispassionate manuer in which he laid bis ease before the electors. The remarks of several influential constituents after the address show that the hon. member for Waitemata is personally highly esteemed by the people of the district, though his nnlifrinaf >i«»B are not in unison with
their own. This is the spirit that should actuate the constituencies of the colony from North Cape to Stewart Jsland. /Let •• measures not men " be the watchword in the coming political contest. Complaints are made of the bad quality of the gas supplied by the Gas Company.
Mb R. McDonald and Mr Dunlop wont down the Piako shaft today to see if it was in anyway affected by the subsidence of the ground near the engine* house recorded yesterday. They found the shaft was in no way damaged, and are of opinion that the accident was caused by the caving in of some of the old stopes at the upper let el. That the settling down is no way connected with the shaft is proved from the fact that the water is still in the hole. Two tanks hare entirely disappeared. Men. were employed; todajr in filling.up the'cavity* < In another column we publish a full report of the speech of Sir t W. Fox to his constituents. -That gentleman appears to hare " got it hot" from the Wanganuites. A rote of no-confidence was passed.
Says the Wellington Chronicle:—" A most convincing proof of the dullness of tr^ide ;in thjs city is showu by the large number of men employed at stonebreaking. We are informed that seventy men are at thej present time 'cracking diamonds' on the reclaimed ground alone."
Says the Taranaki Herald :—■" It is ru mo wed that : M£ Berry, of the New I Zealand Herald, ii to bo made a Resident Magistrate if the present Gorernment remain longer in power. As many of the " Pinafores" now playing all over the country are mere, abortions of the original opera, managers should be compelled to advertise them as "H.M.S.Bib."—Sun. At the meeting of. the Grahamstown Fire Brigade, the officers were all reelected for the ensuing term. Mbs M.; A^li^ahdbii announce* in our advertising columns vttfat, having taken the Sea View House, Beach road, she will carry on her classes there instead of in the Templar Hall as already announced.
