Mbs Elizabeth Leopold died in Graniteville, South Carolina, the other day, at the age of 107 years. Around her grave stood the only surviving son, a whitehaired, bent man of four-score; a grandchild of fifty-sis yes.vs, several greatgrandchildren over forty years of age, a number of great-grandchildren over forty years of age, a number of great-great-grandchildren more than twenty-five years old and some toddlers, great-great-great-grand-children, five generations in all.
A vebsion of the real Solomontic story is to be found in China. As in the Hebrew tale two women had each of them an infant, one of which died by misadventure, the bereaved mother claiming the surviving child. The official before whom they came did not suggest so cruel a measure as division of the infant, but simply ordered that it should be handed to a domestic in his yamen to be brought up for official HFe. He rightly surmised that real mother would gladly accept so good a chance for her offspring-, while the pretended mother, who only wanted the child to dispose of it, would demur. Judgment was accordingly given in favor of the tearful accepteor of the proposition, and the story, which is alleged to be historical, is widely believed. " I'm a worthless fellow, Judge," said George Thomson, in the Fifty-seventh Street Court on Sunday. "I've a family, and I do not support them. A toiling wife, sir, who loves me too much to make a complaint against me. Two ones, who put their arms about my neck and call me • dear father.' I drink and drink and cannot help it. I beg of you to send me where I cannot taste liquor."—" Do you want a month ?"—" More than that." He bowed his head in shame, " More than that, sir. Three—yes, six—months —a year. Do make it for that long. She will try to get me out but keep me there. It is my last hope." His prayer was granted.—New York Times.
