COMMERCIAL PRODUCE MARKET

DUNEDIN (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Sept. 28. The demand for seed wheat continues and the increased price of wheat for the coming year, together with the fact that it is a guaranteed one, is stimulating the interest of farmers in growing additional areas. Odd parcels of wheat are coming on to the' market and all lines of milling quality are readily accepted by millers, while undergrade lines find a market for fowl feed or gristing purposes. The market for oats is lifeless, and neither millers nor shippers are operating owing to the lack of demand. Chaff supplies are plentiful and the demand is easier. Considerable loss has been suffered by the destruction of the linseed oil factory in Dunedin during the week, but the new factory is well on the way to completion and it is anticipated that there will be no hold up in production next year when the new crop of linseed is available. Potato supplies are just sufficient for the demand, and it is evident that there will be no carry-over of table potatoes this year. It is expected that there will be a normal planting of potatoes for the coming year. The seed market remains firm for high testing lines of Montgomery red clover, broad red clover, and certified ryegrass. There is not the same inquiry for low testing lines, as it is not possible to find an overseas outlet for these. Most of the dogstail crop appears to have been disposed of, and although the quantity of’ seed saved this year was much in excess of normal, there has been a ready outlet for it to Great ' Britain and the Continent. Brown top remains unchanged at the lower range of values that has been ruling lately, while Chewing’s fescue is a shade easier. A particularly quiet period is being experienced in cocksfoot.
