WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TE NGAVVAI There was a good attendance at the September meeting of the Te Ngawal Women's Institute. Mrs R. Sullivan presided and welcomed visitors from Timaru. Two new members were enrolled. Congratulations were extended to Mrs Watson on the birth of a son. It was agreed that the usual yearly donations be made to the Makogai Leper Trust Fund and to Stfatheona Training Hostel. Mrs G. Guy was appointed delegate to the half-yearly council meeting. A demonstration of making bread flowers was given by Mrs Elliott, of Timaru. Competitions resulted: Single bloom. Mrs Sullivan 1, Mrs Elliott 2; cluster, Mrs Elliott 1. Mrs W. Guy 2; carrots, Mrs J Guy 1. Mrs Sullivan 2; sponge cake, Mrs Sullivan 1. Miss Elliott 2. At the final euchre and dance evening of the series arranged by the Institute, the prizewinners were Mrs A Cox and Mr S. McCourtney, the consolation prizes going to Miss F. Groundwater and Mr R. Elliott. Widners of the season’s aggregate were Mrs J Guy and Mr S. McCourtney. A competition was won by Mr J. Howes. Music tor dancing was supplied by Mrs G Guy. Mr T. Haar was M.C. BURKE S PASS Mrs Willetts presided over the September meeting of the Burke's Pass Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr and Mrs Willetts in the death of a relative. It was decided to give 10'- toward the Lepers’ Christmas Appeal. A talk on a trip to Queenstown was given by Mrs A. Mackintosh. Competitions resulted: Child's singlet from something old, Mrs McCarthy 1, Miss N. Mackintosh 2: bloom, Miss G Mackintosh 1. Mrs Willetts 2, Mrs McCarthy and Miss N. Mackintosh (equal) 3. WI! EOWBRIDGE There was a fair attendance at the last meeting of the Studholme Women’s Institute. Competitions resulted: Saucer of floating flowers. Mrs W. Miller and Mrs R. Miller (equal) 1, Mrs E. Wilson 2. Mrs R. Campbell 3. Specimen bloom. Mrs E. Wilson 1, Mrs C. Rollinson 2, Mrs R. Miller 3.
