RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Thirty horses have been entered tor the hurdle race at the Dunedin meeting. I The A.J.C. spring meeting is to open at Randwick on Saturday. S. Green, who broke a leg when he fell from Brown Derby at Wanganui, fractured the same limb when Barossa fell at Avondale a year ago. Forage jumped better than previously at Orai-i, and as he possesses i a fair amount of speed he may pay his way this season. Bali was rehandicapped to 10.8 in the Seaview Hurdles at the Otago Hunt meeting, and Hansel to 7.11 in the President's Handicap. Twenty-five horses have been paid up for in the President's Handicap at; the Otago Hunt meeting, but 18 are weighted on 7.7 and only two above 8.0. South Island clubs are to be invited to apply for the r!"ht to hold the Duke of Gloucester Cup race for amateur riders which has been in abeyance since it was run at Wanganui in 1942. The date (February 2) allotted to the Tapanui Club clashes with the Winton meeting on that date. It will be hardly possible for Tapanui to race in opposition to Winton, as it depends largely on Southland horses. Ernada, wiio won the principal handicap at the Thames meeting, was taken over by R. H. Martin at Mataniata. Until a few' days before the race he was in the same stable as the runner-up. Abbey Fox. A. E. Didham will ride Royal Flight in Australia, and arrangements will be made for training after he reaches Melbourne. Didham is available for Immediate in the Melbourne Cup if, his services are desired. Lord Chancellor is claimed to be as good and as fit as ever he was. He will need to be if he is to successfully carry 10.0 in handicap events, and there are few w.f.a. races in Auckland. A Melbourne writer expresses the opinion that Immediate and High Play appear to be New Zealand's best representatives in the Caulfield Cup. It becomes plainer every day that Victorians have not heard much about Royal Flight. The extravagant suggestion that Sleepy Fox was “the best horse since Ajax” looks foolish after his defeat by Accession (Coronation Day-Silver Scorn). Coronation Day is a son of the English Derby winner. Coronach, now located in the North Island. Royal Flight and Typhoon were shipped from Wellington for Sydney on Monday night. Typhoon went in charge of B. Stowe, son of C. J. Stowe (who will go across in a fortnight). Typhoon is travelling in a speciallybuilt box, but Royal Flight is housed in a single-horse trailer. A good deal of interest will centre in the appearance of Psalm in the TallyHo Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting. The best two-year-old in the South Island last season, the Salmagundi filly has caused F. W. Ellis a little anxiety at times. Her run on Saturday should give a line on her prospects in the Dunedin Guineas. A few months ago New Battle was hailed as a steeplechase find, but he let his backors down on several occasions. In the Steeplechase at the Thames meeting he started at odds exceeding the quarter century and was ridden by an amateur. Half the big field failed to get round, but New Battle ran home strongly to win by a couple of lengths. Sir Bradbury and Theolateral were responsible for the pace in the Robinson Handicap, at the Foxton meeting. Theolateral drifted at the home turn, leaving Sir Bradbury clear of Typhoon and Kaitoa. Sir Bradbury battled on when challenged by Typhoon, but the favourite gradually wore him down and beat him by a neck. Accommodation has been booked at Caulfield for Typhoon, who has been nominated for the Caulfield Stakes on October 12. First In and Royal Flight have had quarters reserved at Mentone. First In may have a run in a six furlongs w.f.a. race on Caulfield Cup day, the Melbourne Cup being her objective. It is reported from Melbourne that High Play and Immediate are to leave Sydney immediatelv after the Randwick meeting, but there may be difficulty in arranging transport.

RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 25. Following some rain during the night, the weather was cold at Riccarton this morning. Some useful work was done on the No. 6 grass track but there were no outstanding trials, many of the horses being on the easy list for a few days. Though Air Ace is ~n acceptor at the Otago Hunt meeting he is an unlikely starter. His off-hind leg is causing trouble and M. J. Wadley may have to spell him. If Air Ace does not go south, Piccolo and Deep Harmony, in the same stable, may also miss the Dunedin meeting next week. Spanish Main, who has not shown much form in his recent hurdle races, will resume steeplechasing at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting. F. Holmes will take him south on Thursday and R Register will ride him. L. Cavalier will race three of Mr J. M. Samson's horses at the Otago Hunt meeting. C. H. Mackie will ride Major Argosy and Lex, while A. Messervy will be on Lexia. The horses will leave here on Thursday. A. S. Ellis will leave to-morrow night with Weld Cona for the Otago Hunt meeting. The riding arrangements will depend on whether L. J. Ellis has recovered from the in.nirv to his ankle received in the Geraldine Cup. The two-year-old. Wild Knock, will accompany Weld Cona for the 'cLean Stakes next week. C. B. Dawson will take Falconbridge south on Thursday for the Otago Hunt meeting, where C. McDonald will ride him. Competitor will travel at the same time to contest the Dunedin Guineas next week. Gulf Stream has been kept to useful work since the Grand National meeting and he looks in good order for a trip to Trentham next month.
