FAIRLIE SALEYARDS COMPANY

Annual Meeting Mr S. K. Gillingham presided at the annual meeting of shareholders of the Fairlie Saleyards Company. Ltd. The chairman said that work on the new block of sheep yards was well advanced, and when completed would avoid the necessity of the erection of special temporary yards for the annual fair. About 25,000 sheep had been dipped, which was an increase on recent years. The report concluded by expressing thanks to the Stock Auctioneers’ Association and agents for valuable help and co-operation. The report and balance-sheet was adopted. Mr E. Goodwin, the director to retire in rotation, was re-elected. A. And P. Society Mr W. G. Black presided at a meeting of the committee of the Mackenzie County A. and P Society. The revision of the prize schedule was discussed, and sub-committees were appointed to revise the various sections and to report to the next meeting. The holding of a gymkhana for the purpose of raising funds to clear the debt on the showgrounds property was discussed and the following committee was appointed to go into the matter and to report to the next meeting: Messrs W. L. Bourn (convener!, R. J. Murphy, A. J. Agnew, A. R. Seymour, P. Kido, E. Shaw. K. Anderson and A. Freme, A reply was received from the Mackenzie County Council in regard to the Society’s application for the use of Aorangi Hall on show night, provided it was not required for patriotic purposes. The letter was discussed in committee, and it was finally agreed that the Council be asked to receive the following deputation which would fully explain the Society’s viewpoint: Messrs W. G. Black, P. Kidd, D. W. M. Burnett, A. J. Agnew and T. B. Crampton. The Fairlie Women’s Institute wrote asking for support of an effort that it was proposed to make to have a community centre establishd in Fairlie as a war memorial. Mr P. Kidd said he thought the scheme as outlined would be costly, and he did not think that the time was opportune to go on with such a scheme, especially in view of the shortage of building materials. It was agreed that support would be given to any suitable memorial hall that would be eventually decided on. Mr W. G. Black was elected as a member of the Society. Footballers Entertained After the football match, South Canterbury v. Mackenzie, played at Fairlie on Saturday, both teams were entertained at a dinner held in the Fairlie Hotel. Mr P. J. Keenan, president of the Mackenzie Sub-union, who occupied the chair, expressed the pleasure of all at the resumption of football in the district after a lapse of a few years. He was pleased at the result of the day's game, which augured well for football in the Mackenzie County next season. He congratulated the South Canterbury team on the good game provided, and both teams on the very fine spirit displayed. The following toast list was honoured: “The King,” “The Visiting Team” (Mr G. Giddings, Mr D. Parsons); “The Mackenzie Team" (Mr Lindsay, Mr Depree); “The South Canterbury Rugby Union" (Mr T. B. Crampton, Mr E. J. Fairbrother); “Mackenzie Sub-union” (Mr Fairbrother, Mr P. J. Keenan); and “The Referee” (proposed by Mr B. Mulcahy). In proposing the toasts of “The men of the Second N.Z.E.F. in the combined teams," Mr J. A. Fraser expressed the pleasure of all at seeing such a large proportion of the players wearing the R.S.A. badge. Mr N. Palmer responded to the toast. Weather More rain on Sunday’ and yesterday will have the effect of holding up the sowing of spring crops. In parts of the district the land had become workable, and farmers were making every effort to get in as much wheat as possible. Lambing is now becoming fairly general, and the wet and cold weather is far from welcome. Frosts of up to 15 degrees were recorded last week and had a delaying effect on the growth of feed, which is much needed. Women’s Institute At a meeting of the Fairlie Women's Institute, it was decided that the October meeting be an open one for next-of-kin. Sergeant A. H. Carlton will be the speaker. Other local organisations are to be asked to appoint members to form a community centre committee. The Drama Group under Mr Worthington, W.E.A. tutor, is working for the festival to be staged in October. Thanks were extended to Mr and Mrs D. Jeune for a kowhai tree to be planted in the Domain to replace a tree that failed to survive.
