BOXING

BAKER OUTFOUGHT (N.Z.P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 24. Dan O’Keefe, an unheralded Wellington middle-weight, proved a real dark horse in a professional 10 round bout with Dick Baker. Army and Southland champion, here to-night. Baker was outboxed and outfought and in several rounds was just saved by the gong. He took counts of nine five times, mostly from pile-driver rights which connected cleanly to the jaw. Baker’s gameness under the severe handicap of a closed right eye early in the bout won him the admiration of the crowd, who also applauded O'Keefe for a first class display of boxing and hard punching. O'Keefe scaled 11.6 and Baker 11.0.
