RECORD ENTRIES

j Competitions Rim Smoothly Success Is Assured "These are the biggest competitions we have ever run as rar as entries are concerned,’’ said the president of the South Canterbury Centre of the NewZealand Piping and Dancing Association iMr R. W. R. Munro; last even- | mg. They have new seen going for six days, and we are more than satisfied with the way things have turned out. The judges have had a very hard job, but tnev always seem to satisfy everybody. with so many entries we have had difficulty in finding suitable places in whicn to stage performances, but. this has also been overcome and we are running the competitions at the Bay Hall, the Bay tearooms and the Liicle Playhouse. This means a considerable amount of moving about for the competitors and their parents, but everyone seems to appreciate our difficulties and to take the minor inconveniences in their striae. "I would especially like to give praise to the work of our Ladies' Committee who have toiled unremittingly and ungrudgingly for the good ol the Association in particular and the competitions as a whole,” concluded Mr Munro. At all perlormances again yesterday the halls were tilled to capacity, there being standing room only in the BayHall in the evening. Commenting on ine song and accompanist section, for girls and boys under lb', the judge, Mr F. Calloway, said that this class revealed some pianists who knew something- of the art. of accompaniment but, nevertheless, he would very much like to have seen a boy entrant. "A ver • high standard was attained particularly by some of the younger singers in the English song, any age,” continued Mr Cailoway. "The winner has a fine voice and gave a good interpretation of the popular Vaughan Williams’ song, ‘Linden Lea.’ ” Referring to the instrumental quartet, Mr Cailoway said that he was very disappointed that this section was not larger, as this was a side ol the competitions which could be developed to a great advantage to the community. Two of the groups gave really creditable performances, and the winners maintained an excellent balance throughout. The South Canterbury championships lor the Highlanc. reel under 14, and tne sailor's hornpipe for girls and bovs under 16 were completed last evenin':. “The winner of the Highland reel Aeneas Chisholm (Christchurch) gave’ a very neat performance, and he is a promising dancer,’’ said the judge (Mrs Bruce Scott). "Daphne Baxter, oi Dunedin, who won the hornpipe championship, is a very finished performer,’’ Mrs Scott continued, "and she showed good technique and plenty of animation.” Results of the finals at the festival which was continued throughout yesterday, were as follows, the number of entries in each class being given in parentheses; competitors are from Timaru unless otherwise indicated: Song and dance solo, under 12 (15; ■ Fauia Le Breton (Christchurch), "I'm a Little Teapot,” 78pts 1; Fay Christiansen, “Sergeant Major on Parade,” 77pts 2; Laurel Watts (Christchurch) "Everybody Sing,” 73pts 3; Silvia Marshall, "My Little Wooden Shoes,’’ v.h.c.; Shirley Mills (Oamaru), "The Windmills Turning,” h.c,; Ronald Baker, “Good Night, Good Luck and Carry On,” c.
