BAILEY BRIDGE TO GO

Detour Necessary For Motorists The Bailey Bridge which has spanned the Temuka River for the last two months and formed an Important link on the Main South Highway will not be replaced. It will be dismantled within the next few days and sent back to the depot at Christchurch. This decision has been made on account of the large amount of work it would take to reinstate the bridge after its removal during the flood last week. To place the bridge in position again would necessitate diverting the river and rebuilding the roadway, as well as dismantling and re-erecting the bridge. The amount of work involved would be out of all proportion to the amount of benefit derived and -would delav work on the permanent bridge. Motorists will have to make use of the detour bv w?.y of the Manse Bridge until the repairs to the permanent bridge are complete but these are being pushed ahead.
