TIME INOPPORTUNE

Consideration Of Victory Celebrations The president (Mr S. G. McClelland) reported to the meeting of the Council of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night that he had represented the Chamber at the meeting convened by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) to consider arrangements for victory celebrations. Mr McClelland said that he had expressed the opinion that the time was not opportune to discuss victory celebrations and he had rather thrown cold water on the whole idea Mr W. Ramsay remarked that the Chamber should congratulate Mr McClelland on the attitude he had adopted. It was going a little too fast to discuss victory celebrations at the present time, and when victory came the celebrations would be spontaneous The Prime Minister had stated that it was very unwise to anticipate an earlv end to the war. and that it was anticipated that after the defeat of Germany it would take 18 months to beat the Japanese. It -was proper that rehabilitation matters should be disc. ssed and ever- effort made to deal with possible economic conditions after the war. but it was ridiculous at the present time to discuss victory celebrations.
