SUM WANTED FROM TIMARU

Planning To Meet It Furthex- plans to raise Umaru’s quota for the Victory Loan appeal were aiscussed at a meeting of the Timaru National Savings Committee yesterday, Mr G. H. Andrews presiding. The chairman reported that matters were proceeding satisfactorily. An energetic women’s committee had been formed to make a house-to-house canvass on September 18. Fox- the procession to be held on September 22. spl.endid support had been received from various firms. Business premises would be closed from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. A military display and demonstration of mortal’ fire would be given by the Timaru Boys’ High School cadets at Caroline Bay on September 16, and on September 25 a community sing would be held.

A motion by Mi- P. B. Foote that the South Canterbury Employers’ Association be thanked for theii' co-operation in closing their premises on September 18 was carried unanimously. It was agreed that Messrs Andrews. Foote and J. H. Jones should wait on the Manufacturers’ Association to in vite its co-operation.

Various suggestions were made in regard to providing additional attractions at Caroline Bay on September 16, and it was decided that Mr R. S. Wheelex- should communicate with the Air Force authorities with a view to the arranging of a display and possibly a mock bombing demonstration. Mr Rae reported that the New Zealand Trade Union movement aimed at' raising £10.000,900 as its effort in the Victory Loan appeal, and the South Canterbury quota of that amount was £240,000. dr £8 per Union member. A vigorous appeal would be made to the various unions to raise the quota by subscriptions from their members during the currency of the Victory Loan appeal. On the motion of Messrs Wheeler and Foote, the committee expressed its appreciation of the splendid effort being made by the members of the Federation of Laboux- and the Trades and Labour Council. The chairman paid a tribute to the assistance of the Labour movement in connection with the previous loan appeal. Messrs Andrews. Foote, and C. W. Browne were appointed to make Victory Loan appeals to meetings of employees.
