Price Needed To Encourage Growers (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 6. The opinion that a minimum price of 7/- a bushel for wheat in the 194546 season would be needed to encourage farmers to produce an area sufficient for the whole of New Zealand’s requirements was expressed by members of the Electoral Committee of United Wheatgrowers (N.Z.) Ltd., when they met this week to discuss wheat production and the price for next season. At the invitation of the directors, Mr W. Marshall, a member of the Economic Stabilisation Commission, attended the meeting. Delegates from all the wheat growing areas in the South Island placed the views of their districts before Mr Marshall. They were unanimous that the minimum price for next season would have to be 7/- a bushel. Mr Marshall promised to place the representations of delegates before his colleagues on the Stabilisation Commission, and said he had the authority of the Minister of Supply (the Hon D. G. Sullivan) to say he realised the necessity for making an early pronouncement both as to the acreage required and the price to be paid. The meeting decided that the directors of United Wheatgrowers should prepare a comprehensive form for the collation of particulars of increased costs and the trend of these costs. Forms will be forwarded to members of the Electoral Committee who will gather all the information’ possible in consultation with other farmers’ organisa’mms in their own districts. The information will be analysed by the directors and submitted to the Stabilisation Commission.
