Four Years’ Service

Overseas Sympathetic Attitude Of Appeal Board Enlisting in 1939 and sailing with the First Echelon, William Gilmore, of Timaru, served with a machine-gun battalion in all actions from Greece to Tunisia. After four years overseas he recently returned to New Zealand and. after experiencing difficulties, succeeded in securing a position as an agent with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Timaru. He was just settling down to the task of rehabilitating himself when the Army decided—because of his medical grading and the fact that he was on indefinite leave without pay—that he should receive further military experience and he was called up for one month’s Territorial training. These facts were considered by the No. 108 Armed Forces Appeal Board at Timaru yesterday. It was considered that Gilmore had had sufficient military experience and his appeal against the month in camp was adjourned sine die. Arthur Gordon Williams, employed at the Temuka woolworks, recently returned from overseas service, was also called up for a month in camp. He appealed, and the Board yesterday grantee an adjournment sine die.

Ml’ K. Mackenzie presided and associated with him were Messrs S. G. McClelland and J. Cooke. The secretary, Mr W. C. Mayson, represented the Crown. The Board reviewed a number of appeals yesterday and considered a number of applications for the release of personnel from Army and Air Force camps.

Indefinite release from camp was recommended in the case of the following applications: Mrs K. E. Fraser, Timaru, for Aircraftman Jack McKenzie Fraser; Young Brothers, Timaru, for Gunner J. M. Thomson (W.A.A.C.); L. B. James, Timaru, for Aircraftman I. D. James; South Canterbury Electric Power Board for Aircraftman L. M. V. Robertson; same for Aircraftman B. L. Stuart; Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., Timaru, for Aircraftman V. I. Mills; F. King, Timaru, for Aircraftman Francis Murray King; John J. Guerin, Hilton, for Aircraftman F. T. Brown.

Sine die adjournments were granted in the following appeals: Director of National Service for Raymond George Watkins, tractor-driver, Taiko; Timaru Milling Co., Ltd. for David Archibald I Grant, accountant, Timaru; same for' Douglas Fowler, miller, Timaru; same I for lan McKibben Bennett, Timaru; same for Colin Gray, Timaru (this appeal to be reviewed on December 1. 1944); L. Gaffaney for Michael Edward Gaffaney, farm worker,. Temuka; J. R. Bruce Ltd. for Wilfred Sydney Tank, accountant, Timaru; same for John, Lawrence, engineer. Timaru; same for Andrew Waiter Rankin, storeman, Timaru; same for Francis Richard Fox, miller, Timaru.

On the application of R. A. Rodgers, the mobilisation of E. J. Brown, cycle mechanic, Timaru, was deferred and the case will be reviewed on December 1, 1944. The mobilisation of William Raymond Bilson, machinery assembler, Timaru, was deferred until March 31, 1945, on the application of John Chambers and Son. Ltd. An appeal by the Director of National Service for Cedric Ross Marsh, teamster, Anama, was dismissed.

The following appeal was withdrawn by leave of the Board: John Fitzgerald for Eric Fitzgerald, farmhand, Orari.
