Canvass To Be Made £10,340 Invested To Date Geraldine is leading rural South Canterbury centres with £10,340 invested in the Victory Loan at the end of the first week, with Waimate (£10,333) and Temuka (£6853) close up. Arrangements for a canvass of town and country areas were made at a meeting of the executive this week. The following committee was appointed to canvass the town: —Messrs W. H. Kirk (convener), W. J. Harris. E. P. Bennett, W. Morrison, A. Crotty, Len Bennington, Geo. Hammond, W. P. Tangney, W. P. Marks, J. Woolhouse and H. Ellis. r , It was agreed to send out a special circular to people in the town area, and to approach Messrs J. L. Greenall and J. J. Geurin to act in the Geraldine Flat area, Mr R. G. Charters for Raukapuka, and Mr Linton Mann for the Downs. . r x , , Stock firms agreed to assist the local representatives in the following areas: Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., Tripp Settlement, Peel Forest, Rangitata Gorge, Woodbury; C.F.C.A., Rangitata Island, Rangitata. Belfield. Orari Bridge, Orari; National Mortgage, Cooper’s Creek, Arundel, Silverton; N.Z. Loan Company, Pleasant Valley, Te Moana, Four Peaks, Geraldine Downs, Raukapuka; Dalgety’s, Gapes and Beautiful Valleys, Kakahu, Hilton, and Geraldine Flat. It was agreed that the chairman (Mr J. C. Tcmnler) and organiser 'Mr F. J. Shearer) should approach the women’s organisations asking them to sell bonds on sale days. Highway Bridges Provisional plans for the Hilton School bridge and for Black Creek bridge on the Winchester-Hanging Rock Main Highway have been forwarded to the Main Highways Board, reported the engineer (Mr J. R. Hawcridge) at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council. Although these two urgent jobs had been struck off the current year’s estimates, he said, it would have time at a later date if approval could be secured and plans held in readiness for .action as soon as monetary authority was obtained. Mr Hawcridge said that the Main Highways Board had been written to in reference to the Skipton bridge, emphasising the urgency of the work and the Council’s desire to have the bridge built this year as finance had already been arranged. Fewer Births Seven births were registered at Geraldine during August, compared with 13 in the corresponding month last year. There was one death as compared with four last year, and no marriages compared with two last year. Rangitata Water Race Surveys for the Rangitata water race extension had been completed and plans for 4 miles 40 chains of race had been prepared, the engineer (Mr J. R. Hawcridge) reported at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council. The estimated cost, including culvert and flume, but not including water gates, was £240. Surveys had taken three days in the field, and plans and estimates three days in the office. Personal Mrs J. Mead and family, Christchurch, who were the guests of Mrs W. Gudex, Cattle Valley, have left for Timaru. Miss Brenda Haywood, Geraldine, is the guest of Mrs Maxwell, Beautiful Valley. Mrs O. Parr, Middle Valley, has left on a visit to Dunedin. A social and presentation to Aircraftman Ken Linton was held in the Skipton School. Mr W. Gudex (chairman) wished the guest all the best. Other speakers were Messrs Woodham and R. B. Temple.
