RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK
Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase to-day. Summons ricked himself slightly when winning the Napier Steenlecha.se. and Cherry Plum will be the sole Beatson representative in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase to-day. Last year Great Quex had to beat only three opponents to win the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles. This year there are more than 20 acceptors, and the field promises to be nearly the largest in the history of the race. All round the card is> the best for a winter meeting at Hastings for a long time. Strip seems to have recovered from the attack of bleeding which pulled him up at Oamaru. On previous occasions he has won after a similar experience.
Lord Nuffield is being treated to a spell. He is not suited by soft tracks, and after his win with 9.13 at Oamaru he would have had to carry huge weights in races with an 8.0 minimum. None of the high-scoring trainers or reinsmen was successful at Ashburton, and the premierships depend on the result of the Washdyke Trot to be run at the Hunt meeting. C. S. Donald leads the trainers with 17 points, and cannot be headed, but it is possible for V. Alborn 16 to make a tie. M. Stewart 17 is in the same position at the head of the reinsmen’s lists, with O. E. Hooper 16 and V. Alborn 16 with chances of making a dead-heat. Says the Auckland “Herald”: “What has been accomplished recently in running division races at Te Rapa and Ellerslie makes one wonder whether the Wellington Racing Club’s plan to reduce fields to within the safety limit by such means as the stewards see fit is advisable. Experience at Te Rapa and Ellerslie has shown that division races can be run successfully and the Wellington Racing Club might be well advised to reconsider the position. Clubs owe a duty to racing men to provide as wide a distribution of stakes as is possible, especially under the restricted wartime calendar, and there can be no doubt that division races are serving a verv useful purpose under present conditions.” The District which has suffered most this season as a result of traffic restrictions, unavailability of courses, and arbitrary reductions of permits, is Otago. Normally there are eight days of trotting in the province: this season there have been three. Ordinarily 23 days’ racing are available; during the current term the number has been reduced to 12. Unless vigilance is exercised, the position may be even worse next year for Otago owners and trainers. Assuming that half last year’s quota was allotted to racing clubs. Wingatui might get six days. Oamaru three, and Waikouaiti and Beaumont one each. But there is no assurance that Wingatui will be available. and if the permits are allotted and cannot be used there is a danger that they may be lost altogether. If Forburj' cannot be used. Oamaru will be the only trotting track available in the province.
