SENT TO PRISON
Military Defaulter i P.A.) ASHBURTON. June 12. A young man was sent to gaol, and is later to be detained in a defaulters’ camp, when he appeared before Mr H. Morgan, S.M.. in the Ashburton Magistrate's Court to-day. James Stewart Chisnail, charged with failing to comply with an order to report to an Army office, pleaded guilty. It was stated that defendant was 18 years of age and was called up for service. He appealed on the ground of conscientious objection. This was dismissed on condition that he did noncombatant duty only. He was ordered into an ambulance unit but did not report. The Magistrate: You still adhere to your decision not to serve? Defendant: Yes, sir. , The Magistrate: You know the likely consequences? Defendant: Yes. sir. Defendant was sentenced to one month’s hard labour at Paparua Prison, this to be followed bv defaulter’s detention for the duration of the war.
