LINEN FLAX

Quota Reached Satisfactory Position •‘South Canterbury has been fortunate this year in being able to obtain the required, acreage for linen flax,” an officer of the Department of Agriculture informed a “Timaru Herald" representative yesterday, “and the areas offered arc now being inspected. It is also very gratifying to note that those farmers who have participated in the growing of linen flax since its introduction in South Canterbury in 1940-41 have realised the importance of early preparation of the land and have proceeded with the work very promptly. “Crops from the following areas are required for the four factories:—Washdyke, 2000 acres, Makikihi 2000, Fairlie 1500 and Geraldine 1500, a total of 7000 acres. The acreages quoted are the maximum areas with which the olants can cope, and, consequently the acreage which can be accepted Is limited. This will mean, unfortunately, that some of the applicants who wish ‘o grow flax will be disappointed. “In order to ensure a successful crop it is necessary, generally speaki g, that the ground .• hould be deep ploughed not later than the end of June," the officer concluded, “but in some localities with a certain type of soil later ploughing is possible."
