BRAVERY OF NATIVES

NEW GUINEA SHARK TALE SYDNEY, August 30. Sixty Australians are in the 1941 list of the Royal Humane Society awards for acts of bravery, and the names include those of two natives of Pila Pila, New Guinea. Tomat, a 24-year-old native, was surfing near Rabaul, when a shark attacked a companion named Tiut. Tomat went to Tiut’s aid, and the official report relates that he “literally fought with the shark” for the posession of Tiut. Tokalule helped Tomat and they brought Tiut ashore, but he died later from his lacerations. Tomat will receive a silver medal and Tokalule a bronze, but officials ar? puzzling where to pin them.
