BOWLING SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE

ANNUAL REPORT Tire annual report of the executive of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre, which records a profit of £49/5/6 on the year’s operations, is as under :

The number of clubs affiliated to the Centre is 11, the same number as last year. Tire total membership is 540 as against 520 for the season 1939-40. The following is a list of the present membership of the clubs with last year's figures in parentheses:—Ashbury 39 (35), Fairlie 28 (24), Geraldine 44 (40), Highfield 31 (35), Kia Toa 87 (80), Park 44 (45), Pleasant Point 21 (20), Temuka 46 (50), Tlmaru 86 (79), Waimate 52 (51), West End 62 (61); total 54* (51 ).

The year commenced with a credit balance of £9O/14/4 and ended with a credit balance of £139/19/10, showing a profit of £49/5/6 for the year. The sum of £2O/12/0 was given to the Patriotic Fund. The annual fixture with the Christchurch centre for the Steans cup was played in Christchurch and resulted in a win fqy Canterbury by 192 points to 161. The Murray Bowl match was played at Oamaru on the Phoenix green and resulted in a win for South Canterbury. The match for the Manahuna Vase (South Canterbury v. Ashburton Sub-Centre) was played at Tii.iaru on the Tlmaru Club's green and resulted in a win for South Canterbury.

The annual gathering of elderly bowlers was again held at the Park. More than 50 elderly bowlers were present and had a most enjoyable day. They were entertained by the Mayor and Mayoress at afternoon tea and were presented with ribbon badges to commemorate th? occ- ion.

The Leslie Cup and Moyes Honours Board competition was won by the Kia Toa Club, the Bristol Cup by the West End Club (second time in succession), and for the Christmas tournament an entry of 32 fours, 80 pairs and 81 singles were received, which proved a great success both socially and financially. Tire winners were: —Fours, J. Hardie, J. Stevenson, A. Clark and N. Hamlyn (Ashbury). Pairs, J. Crisp and W. Campbell (Phoenix). Singles. J. Lee (Tlmaru). Mr C. H. Manning was again elected as the delegate to the N.Z.B.A. The champion of champions were,'— Fours (Vinnell Memorial Cup), W. Guthrie, C. Harding, C. Dewar, T. Currie (West End). Pairs, R. G. Sampson anc V. Sampson. Singles, C. Howe (Park). Ve ol 'er our congratulations to the winners of the various events.

Our thanks are due to the clubs for the use of their greens for Centre fixtures, to the auditor, Mr R. Orwin, and also the Ladies’ Centre for its assistance during the season. PARK LADIES’ CLUB The fifth annual report of the Park Ladles’ Bowling Club says the usual club competitions were held, all being keenly contested. The results were:— Champion singles (Worsley Cup), Mrs J. Murphy, runner-up, Mrs E. Power. Handicap singles (Power Cup), Mrs J. Gilmore, runner-up, Mrs J. Murphy. Handicap doubles (Chittock Rose Bowl), Mesdames ...very and Purcell, runners-up, Mesdar.cs Healy and Shalles. Gilmore two bowl double, Mesdames O’Nell and Chittock, runner-up, Mesdames Stevens and Heaton. Keefe trophy, Mrs J. Gilmore, runner-up, Mrs Shalles. Toneycliffe challenge b; ‘tons, Mesdames Hargadon <s), Avery, Heaton and Power. The club also competed for the Ferguson Cup, and although not successful, the inter-club matches were thoroughly enjoyed. The club extends congratulations to the Temuka Club, the winners of this competition. A farewell and p.. entation was tendered Mrs C. S. Keefe. The president (Mrs Healy), thanked her for the keen interest she had displayed in the club since its inception, and wisher her success in the future. A combined social evening was held, the guests of honour being Mrs J. Murphy and Mr C. Howe, champion of champions respectively. Mr J. Gilmore presided. We congratulate these two members and wish them success in defending the title in the coming season. Gratitude is expressed to the donors of cash and trophies for the various functions and competitions, special thanks being due to Mrs F. Chittoclt for her efforts, on behalf of the club. The club also thanks the president and members of the Men’s Club for their very real help and cooperation; the coach, Mr J. Worsley; Mr J. Millar, hon. auditor; the greenkeeper, and all who assisted in any way to bring about a -very satisfactory credit balance.
