DEMOCRATIC LABOUR
Resolutions Of Conference (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 8. An all day conference of the Democratic Labour Party was attended by a large number of delegates from both islands. Full consideration was given to the election policy of the party and arrangements were made for an early general election. Mr W. E. Barnard wks elected unopposed as national president, and Jhe present secretary and treasurer were also re-elected unopposed. The conference approved the effort which is being made to establish better relations with U.S.S.R., and recommended the appointment of New Zealand representatives at Washington. Chungking and Vladivostock and, when practicable, at Tokio, in the interests of peace and friendship in the Pacific. The principle of a fortnight’s paid holiday yearly for all workers was affirmed. The establishment of a motherhood endowment so that rents might be paid for large families without the present distress was reaffirmed. The conference approved the clinic system of public health in place of the panel system. The question of pay in the armed forces was fully discussed. A motion supporting better pay for all the lower paid ranks was carried. A message of congratulations to the men of the New Zealand Division is to be sent to MajorGeneral Freyberg.
