Concentration Of Troops

At Trentham

(P.A.) CHRISTOJU-RCH, Sept. 8. The reasons for the decision to concentrate the tra* -‘ng of all overseas troops at TTentham are to be sought by the Christchurch City Council from the M’ ister of Fffe _, 'r (Hon. F. Jo-es).

Cr. J. N. Clarke, who int.-diced the subject, said he failed to see why the decision had been reached. He claimed that it Was unfair to the men. to their relatives and to the business people of the South I land. He did not wish to bring up the old North versus South controversy ag- ', but he felt that the South Island wc; b ing badly treated in this matter by the Government. He moved that a conference of interested persons be called.

The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrew's): Interested persons in a rather wide term.

Cr. piar! e: Well, everybody’s interested. On the sv - ration of '”r. m. E. Lyons Cr. Clarke’s motion was —lthdrawn and another by* Cr. Lyons proposing that the Minister be asked. for the Government's reasons was adopted.

The Mayor said he understood the Government had acted on the adv.' ? of the expert brought from England.
