WAIMATE LARGE DONATION

Racing Club Gives £lOO Gift To Red Cross A donation of £lOO to its funds has been received by the Waimate SubCentre of the Red Cross from the Waimate Racing Club. The committee decided to allocate £5 to each of the other 13 Waimate sub-centres out of the donation, and to hand £lO to the Waimate Voluntary Aid Detachment. At the same meeting a donation of £lO was received from Mr A Walker. Mrs G. B. Turnbull presided at the meeting. Appreciation of the’ generous donations was expressed. A letter was received from Mr W. E. Pall stating that he had cut out a number of children's suits from materials supplied by the Sub-Centre. Mr Fail is to be thanked for his work. It was stated that 100 knitted articles had been dispatched to the forces in the Middle East as well as a good parcel of jug covers and throw-overs for the use of patients in hospital. It was reported that the membership had reached a total of 56, four having joined since the previous meeting.

GOLF FRANCIS CUP A. Guy’s aggregate of 138 for the Francis Cup tompetition has been beaten by W. G. Calder, whose score was 137. Guy was adjudged the winner, but the club now advises that a check over of the cards has given Calder the cup by one stroke. Guy's figures were exceptional and that description can also be applied to the scores obtained by Calder. In four medal rounds, his two best scores were 67 and 70, which gives him the cup. Calder is another player whose handicap has been substantially reduced during the season. The following is the draw for the sixth bogey match to be played by members of the Ladies’ Golf Club today:—Mrs D. Macdonald v. Mrs P. O’Donohue; Mrs J. Healey v. Mrs J. Barrie; Mrs H. Kellett v. Miss B. Bltchener, Mrs E. J. Brock v. Miss M. Macdonald, Mrs O’Hara v. Mrs I. Schrader; Mrs J. W. Hayes ,v. Mrs E. B. Fraser; Mrs O. Barclay v. Mrs Ruddenklau; Mrs J. Bowron v. Mirs Rodgers; Mrs G. Aitken v. Mrs P. Grant; Mrs Evans v. Mrs A. F. Sargent; Mrs Scott v. marker. Last week’s medal round was won by Mrs Ruddenklau. Miss P. Paul defeated rilss M. Macdonald at the nineteenth hole in the final of the 36 handicap knock-out. In the final of the Mary Fitch Cup, Mrs Ruddenklau will play Mrs Kellett. RETURNED SOL -lERS At the monthly meeting of the executive of the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the secretary (Mr d’A. S. L. Grut) stated that there were 140 financial members compared with 101 at the same date last year. The secretary also reported on an interview with Mr J. C. Hay, representing the Primary Producers’ Appeal Committee in regard to Appeal Boards and conscientious objectors. An enjoyable card evening was held by the ir.anch for the next-of-kin of members of the forces serving overseas. The president (Mr A. J. Kirby) welcomed the guests. He added that although only 50 were present from an invitation list of more than 200, the branch proposed to continue such functions, and had arrangements in hand to provide a picture party. At the conclusion of the evening, Mr W. George thanked the branch for an enjoyable evening.
