MOTOR COLLISON
Army Officers Injured
(PA.) AUCKLAND, August 17. Two army officers were injured In a motor collision on the Whakataneopotiki road, nine miles from Whakatane, about 550 pm. on Saturday. They were Captain H. Whitbread, A.D.C. to General Sir Guy Williams, military adviser to the New Zealand Government and Lieutenant G. Murray, of the Paeroa area office staff. The car in which they were travelling was following a vehicle in which were General Williams. Brigadier West, Major Dawe (area officer at Paeroa), and sergeant Stehetison. The party yras making a visit of inspection through the Northern Military District. The second car, driven by Lieutenant Murray, collided with a truck coming in the opposite direction and driven by R- J- Mercer, of Edgecumbe. The two occupants were injured and taken to the Whakatane Hospital. It was reported to-night that Captain Whitbread was still unconscious and suffering from severe concussion. Lieutenant Murray, who suffered shock and abrasions, was not in a serious condition. Mercer was not injured. The official party returned to Whakatane as a result of the accident. Captain Whitbread, who arrived m New Zealand in June, is an Imperial Army officer, his unit being Queen Victoria s Rifles.
