RAID ON GERMANY LONDON, August 15. Over 300 British bombers last night penetrated the German defences and bombed Hamburg. Osnabruck and Magdeburg. Twelve ’planes failed to return, but this is a very small percentage of the attacking force. The Germans stated that the ’planes tried to raid Berlin. DEATH IN CRASH Mr Arthur Purvis, head of the British Purchasing Mission in the United States, was among the 22 persons killed when the ’plane of the Atlantic Ferry Command crashed. The ’plane had taken off on a return flight to America and was rising clear when it began to lose height and struck a road on the edge of the aerodrome. The heat and smoke were so intense that there was no hope of saving the occupants. RELATIONS CORDIAL LONDON, August 15. Mr Ishii, spokesman for the Japanese Information Bureau, said that Japan’s relations with Russia were cardial. Japan had made no demand! on the Soviet. AWARDED D.F.C. (Rec. 1.20 am.) LONDON, August 15. Two members of the RN.Z AF., Sergeants R. J. C. Grant and William Jack Scott have been awarded the D.F.C. The citations state:— "Grant has taken part in 22 operations over enemy territory in which he has destroyed two enemy planes and damaged several others. His keenness and devotion to duty have set an excellent example. “A Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant and Scott as pilot and air gunner respectively achieved conspicuous success during night fighting operations. One night in April they destroyed a Heinkel 101 and since then have destroyed three more enemy planes, two of which were shot down during the same patrol Both the pilot and displayed great skill and determination during these operations.” A Ne .; Zealand member of the Royal Air Force, Acting Squadron Leader Victor Bosanquet Verity (of Ca'e, South Canterbury), has been awarded the D.F.C. The citation stateg: “Verity has shown a fine example by the skill with which he has intercepted enemy plaiies at night time and the determination displayed in his attacks. He has destroyed at least two enemy planes and damaged two others.”
